Momentum

They were winning, but then they lost momentum.
Boy the momentum has clearly shifted in the other teams favor.
They have BIG MO on their side now.

Those three sports clichés are repeated in almost every sports telecast. It doesn’t even matter what sport. Football, basketball, baseball. I have heard them in men’s games and I have heard them say it during women’s games. I have heard them uttered during professional games and all the way down to pee wee.

What is momentum exactly? And since it is so powerful in sports do teams practice it? Where do you get it? Momentum really is an interesting phenomena. If you ask 100 coaches you will probably get 100 different answers as to how to attain momentum. They will, however, mostly all agree on its definition and as a person, will attest to the power of momentum.

Ownership + Measurement= Accountability. When we all agree on that we pull in the same direction. When we all pull in the same direction we start gaining momentum. We define momentum at KB Building Services as the 3rd step in our annual planning. We go thru the process of our Annual Strategic Plan. We then get our team aligned in the direction of our plan by assigning owners, measuring the results, and holding them accountable. Once those two steps have been executed, we discover the momentum happening inside our business. It is not unlike a sports momentum. Hard to explain, tough to get, and fun to ride. The real moments of clarity are when the momentum is NOT happening……it is then that we have to go back and inspect what we expect. Something with the strategic plan or something with the owner of the priorities has to be tweaked…..or maybe both. But we know that if we get the strategy right, and then the alignment is true….momentum is on its way.
